Art therapy has often been a hot topic in the city. HKAAT was honor to collaborate with PMQ x Detour 2017 and provided 6 experimental workshops and a seminar talk for the general public. If you missed it, don’t worry, you can always take a look from our event pictures and get a glimpse of joy there.  With the theme of “Chaos to Harmony”, our professional members volunteered to provide 6 very much dynamic and diverse art therapy workshops for the general public to experience. Some came for relaxation, some came for curiosity, some came for meaning searching, some came for family time, some came for inspiration. Within the given space provided by the PMQ, art therapists invited participants to freely engaged and recreated a space of harmony within themselves, with their newly met acquaintances, and some with their lifetime friends. Some shared that their children were absorbed in the creative space and became more creative. Some shared that they received support from visual images drew by newly met acquaintances. Some carried baggage of questions and asked for alternative outlets and directions from their own images.  With the support from the PMQ x Detour 2017 team, our professional art therapist members, HKAAT EXCO members, and most importantly our general members volunteers, HKAAT were able to connect the public and together experiencing this transcending moment from transforming chaos into a space of peace and harmony.

Stigma on Rehabilitation center’s residents have often been labeled and misunderstood. General public doubted about their abilities and stabilities and often hold a limited stereotypical views on them. One of the main causes of the misunderstanding came from isolation in an institutionalize environment and it is difficult for the community to either communicate or exchange experience with rehab residents.  With this in mind, art therapist Ms Grace Chan, from The Providence Garden For Rehab, was determined to use art and art making experience to connect the general public with the residents. She collaborated with some local primary & secondary school students as well as the HKAAT community service volunteers, to allow general public to have art making experience with the residents and exchange warm greeting where boundary and misunderstanding can be reduced.

In early March 2018, Ms Chan organized an art exhibition at Tuen Mun Town Hall for the local community where people can witness the joy and creativity expressed through arts in daily living through residents’ daily necessity items, such as wheel chair, guitars, bookshelf, and tables. Residents from the rehabilitation center might be bounded by their physical or mental capacity yet with art they can be as creative as any able person. And in the world of creation, they can break free from the physical and mental limitation that was bounded to them. It was a wonderful exhibition and meaningful projects that Ms Chan has organized along for her residents and the community. HKAAT would love to acknowledge Ms Chan for her dedication toward her service recipients and her passion in educating the general public through creativities modality. Indeed our community needs more of such creative and educative exhibition and collaboration where boundary, stigma and misunderstanding can be reduced among people.
