About

Adrian is currently an Associate Professor of Education in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Macao Polytechnic University. With an early background in Philosophy and Religious Studies, he has always had an interest in understanding the human quest for meaning when facing the fundamental existential concerns of identity, freedom and death. In this regard, his recent studies in Buddhist-inspired counselling have provided him with a spiritual framework for knowing and understanding the human condition as well as responding adaptively to human suffering. His eclectic and integrative counselling approach has also been inspired by humanistic and person-centred psychology and the belief in the development of the infinite potential in every human being for growth and well-being given the appropriate facilitative conditions. As a result, and based on his studies and work in Play therapy and Art therapy, it has become clear to Adrian that therapeutic change springs first from the creation of a secure and authentic relationship characterized by empathy and acceptance. In addition, as an art therapist, play therapist and trainee Sandplay therapist, he continues to make use of the therapeutic potential of the created image and symbols to facilitate personal insight, self-reflection, personal growth and healing in his clients. The utilization of a dynamic source of unconscious imagery and symbology also reflects Adrian’s view of the relevance of a psychodynamic understanding of the human mind, with therapy aiming to tap into the rich healing waters of the unconscious. As for his counselling work, most of his clients have been children and teenagers in school pastoral, counselling and SEN settings spanning 34 years and three countries, namely, the UK, India and now Macao.
